A display of numerous stone arrowheads, neatly arranged in rows on a flat surface, showing a variety of triangular shapes and sizes with notched bases. Their shape resembles a Star Trek combadge.

I recall a senior manager at a university I worked at observing that likewise archaeology graduates ‘Are like rats, you get everywhere’ - it was meant as a compliment. We can turn our skills to all kinds of diverse environments.

Buon #Ferragosto!

Fresco from #Pompeii (possibly from Fullonica of Sestius Venustus) and a unique example of a group of just women celebrating in what looks to be a rather wonderfully rowdy dining scene with upturned glassware, music being played and a woman holding aloft a ladle.
A woman wearing cream and yellow garments holds a silver ladle aloft. Behind her couches of women seasoned a wooden table look on or play flutes. In the background two slaves pull back the curtain to gaze at the merriment

Yes, in Archaeometry and Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry. This was done by microbiologist Chris Allen at Queen’s Belfast, the microbial dna found was horses - in large numbers - but don’t think they found any elephants — sadly

Delighted to find that Dr Eve MacDonald @gevemac.bsky.social has a new book out on Carthage which uses the latest archaeological research. Her 2015 book Hannibal A Hellenistic Life is still the best biography of Hannibal for me because it placed him in a wider context than the military exploits.

Since Messrs #Netenyahu & #Putin have both drawn from me Carthaginian peace analogies—& the prophetic warning of Bertold Brecht—it is fitting & humbling to commend this outstanding new history of Carthage from @gevemac.bsky.social—who 10yrs ago reframed the way we see Hannibal
