The "we prefer to leave the interpretation up to the fans" cop out is worn out and it sucked back when they did it with Breath of the Wild.

Realistically they can keep going with nothing of substance, though I've seen a lot of negative reactions to Tears of the Kingdom's abysmal narrative as well.

At any point that they do want to try with a story, they will have to address the problem of the broader lore, so having the timeline helps to that end.

But I don't really understand the aversion to investing in a good narrative. Why not give fans more ways to love and appreciate the games?
