It's wild to me that there are a lot of Germans descended from Nazis AND ALSO a lot of Germans descended from Holocaust survivors in Argentina.

I kind of find the idea of a self-contained system of ethical axioms absolutely laughable, tbh.
Like, even mathematics is incomplete (not that Kant knew that, but philosophy is often rendered historically silly). Who are we kidding with this?

I think it's interesting how his ethics formed the backbone of modern human rights discourse but *also* I think he provides a pretty alarmingly shaky foundation for any sort of ethical rights discourse.

I think a lot of the time people use it to avoid thinking further about something or its implications. In the US, it's almost always used in defense of even the most brutal historical forms of racism and sexism, usually as apologia for their contemporary forms.

A lot of people use history as a means to justify themselves as the "most advanced" moral entity. It becomes a thought terminator and behavior justifier rather than a way to explore and understand humanity and ourselves.
The desire to avoid personal discomfort drives a lot of it, I think

I don't think adults are free of social influence either, so I don't really agree with you on that. I think the idea that every individual has a duty toward introduction and questioning is itself a product of a specific social and historical context.

Like, to be clear, I think we should focus many more critiques at higher levels than individuals and their decisions.
But still, you can criticize someone's stated beliefs versus their practices, and I'm definitely not an exception to that!!

I think there's always a mixture of people who knew and did it anyway, people who knew and went along for comfort or security, and people who genuinely believed the received wisdom of the day. I also think you can criticize each of those groups for many different, often overlapping, reasons.
