IRT sounds very much like the grading system we currently have in NZ, with achieved, merit and excellence questions and responses. Sadly it looks like we're getting rid of this for A-E percentage grading.

It really doesn’t. Plato had a great answer to this problem more than two millennia ago. In the Theaetetus, he describes memory not as a storehouse or filing cabinet, but as a birdcage. Imagine, he says, that each of us has a cage in our minds filled with birds. 1/

I keep coming back to this. Just such a fundamental failure of everything that has been claimed about a "knowledge rich" curriculum. Teachers are demanded to have higher standards but this slop is what they put out as their big rewrite.
