Perhaps independence comes from a journalist being willing to swim against that tide, and a medium willing to allow that opposing point of view. In our tightly polarized society, that seems rare. I will keep looking. 4/4

The 'fair and balanced' game shows a thoughtful and eloquent representative from our side, and the most extreme whacko we could find from the other. 3/x

All media has an owner, whose hiring and management practices will favor a point of view; investors, advertisers, and ultimately the audience all influence what stories are reported and how they are slanted. 2/x

Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed answer. The examples of Sinclair and Gannett make the not-independent ones clear. So independence comes down to 'is the journalist/talking head being told what to say'? It seems impossible to be entirely free from influence. 1/x

I used to live in Quincy, but it's a long way now, so I can't attend. But if I could, and if you had a Q&A, my question(s) would be:

People keep telling me to seek out "Independent Media." What is that, and is there even such a thing? Independent of what? And why is it better?

People have forgotten. England was in business for hundreds of years before us; China too. We show up and in about 2 hundred years we are the most powerful country on the planet. How did we do it? Immigration! It's our super-power.

What we've lost with this is serendipity. I might want the comics most, but I'd turn through the pages and see headlines of other things that might catch my interest. I honestly miss it, and I think we are all poorer for the specialization online.

Adding this to my 2025 playlist. I'm noticing a lot of what's on that list came from your recommendations. Thank you!

Yep. Got a mention on NPR yesterday. Can't decide if the analogy is Tom Sawyer or Brer Rabbit - but as long as they spell your name right!

I'm certain I would enjoy it. Thank you.

Any chance this will be recorded? I can't travel for a while.

Hhmmm... Not sure just what to make of this, but it's interesting.
Just posting this so I can find it again. There's something inside this I need to understand. By working together, the crowd lost its wisdom.

A group of ten friends are making a decision. 9 of them think "A" but they all know that Jennifer hates "A." If the vote were anonymous "A" would win, but if asked for a show of hands, some of those votes would side with Jennifer. Which is fair, 'cause they all know she can be belligerent.

Perhaps they had to "kneel and pray" and "crawl and bark" is just a colorful description.

It also, at some point in 1973, had the most profound impact on my life of any music I'd ever heard. I remember quoting some lyrics to my father ("So you run and you run to catch up with the sun, ...") He thought for a minute and said, "Wisdom can sometimes be found in unexpected places."

I can tell you where they do shop. Between Amazon, Apple, B&N, and Kobo - the clicks all go to Amazon. (YMMV). Apple has gained a little lately - some people like to read on their phone - but is still statistically insignificant. Not being available on Amazon is like being on p.2 of Google results.
