If you “improve” a desert with shade or water, you erase it. Add freshwater to a salt marsh or cool hydrothermal vents and the specialists vanish. Ecosystems are defined by constraints, not comfort.

I think this is a bit misleading- in the mojave, for example, even if it looks "greener", shade is not necessarily a good thing. Neither is converting virgin desert to feed crop farmland.
