The Yeast2025 meeting in Paris is over, and was so much fun. It was exciting to see a room full of yeast biologists, with more than 500 people. It was also great to be part of the dream team of organizers, led by @gillesfischer.bsky.social

The Meselson and Stahl experiment demonstrated in 1958 that DNA replicated semi-conservatively.

Meaning, each of the two strands of DNA serves as a template for a new copy to made of the complementary strand.

Foundational finding, elegant experimental design.
The Meselson-Stahl Experiment, diagrammed to show the three possible outcomes: conservative, dispersive or semi-conservative.

📢 New paper out in Mol Syst Biol!
During the development of WT yeast colonies, small cell subpopulations experience transient, high-intensity mutational bursts. Such hypermutation episodes are modulated by the DNA damage tolerance pathway 🧬

NIH funding supporting the HMMER and Infernal software projects has been terminated. NIH states that our work, as well as all other federally funded research at Harvard, is of no benefit to the US.

In the latest research article of the series #technoYeast, Han-Ying Jhuang, Dimitra Aggeli & Gregory Lang estimate the efficiency of transformation vs cytoduction in introducing plasmids into #yeast, and show that cytoduction is significantly more efficient.

Cytoduction Preserves Genetic Diversity Following Plasmid Transfer Into Pooled Yeast Libraries
Unlike transformation, cytoduction (mating without nuclear fusion) is efficient at introducing plasmids into high-diversity libraries with minimal impact on population diversity.
