reading this made me realize that the hard problem of consciousness is roughly equivalent to stopping a physicist who's describing electrodynamics to say 'wait. until you tell me *why* electrons are attracted to protons, I won't accept your descriptive claims'

this piece is so weird. Mieville demands of historical materialism a thing that it can't possibly provide, then says the good news is we don't need to be metaphysical materialists, and closes by suggesting that theology probably ain't sounding so bad right about now huh

you're telling me that, like Spinoza, David Ricardo was also from a Sephardic Jewish family exiled from Portugal during the Inquisition, and he also wound up cut off from his family? the main difference is that Spinoza was cut off for having cool ideas about God whereas Ricardo married a Quaker girl

I'm glad I spent so much time learning about political economy from a historical materialist perspective because I'm able now to predict the coming catastrophes with disturbing accuracy and also I can't do anything about them. this makes me fun to be around
