Controversial opinion:

Only people who are very very good should read their presentations at conferences, because it's more difficult to engage the audience when reading (vs presenting freely)

Excellent question. Unfortunately, the answers seems to be: yes

In two occasions I almost got academic positions I REALLY wanted (I was the second in the list), and I realize only now that they were in places I absolutely don't like... so maybe it's destiny protecting me from living where I won't be truly happy

All the best for your new position!

Many of the groups I study also are populist in using digital media as an alternative to the "mainstram media," which are seen as in the hands of political elites.

A grounding text on populism is Ernesto Laclau's "On Populist Reason" www.amazon.it/Populist-Rea...

What I know, is that far-right leaders often use populist communication to interact with people who feel marginalized, so they can present themselves as one of them.

What is populism?

Populism is how the "common people" are seen as separate and different from the "elites"

I attended the 9th Populism Specialist Symposium in Thessaloniki and I mainly learned that... I still have a lot of learning to do on populism.

Me: they’ll release the movie of the cat in the hat

Toddler: really? Can we watch it tomorrow?

Me: No it’s in 2026, next year

Toddler: WHAT? I’ll be 4 in a year! I’ll be old! I won’t even like movies anymore!

I spent 5 years of my life studying Ancient Greek for 6 hours a week and now I totally see the point because I entered a shop in Thessaloniki and understood where the children section was

If you want to stop the genocide, we're on the same side and we're fighting for the same cause

And fun fact: my 2018 monograph has a chapter on anti-gender groups which is titled "who's afraid of gender", but the reason of my chapter's name is a tale for another day So of course that's today reading suggestion

And not only that, she's an incredible human being, she took the time to talk with me and my colleague @genderedform.bsky.social asking about our work, and she's so kind and friendly.

I've always admired Butler's work but her speech was absolutely fantastic, touching upon all the key issues of our time: from gender to Palestine, from fascism to hegemony.

Reading suggestion:

Judith Butler, "Who's afraid of gender?"

I have just attended the 9th Populism Specialist Group Symposium in Thessaloniki, Greece, and one of the keynote speakers was Judith Butler.

Twice, workers in Italy went on strike against the genocide. Twice, our department suspended its lectures. Not because professors joined the strike — most didn’t — but because the administrative staff did. A reminder: neither power nor morality are the prerogative of the elites. Quite the contrary.

I look sad in this picture but really I am so happy! This is a fantastic workshop

@giuliaevolvi.bsky.social and myself presented our paper on populism and social media in G.Meloni's election campaign at the symposium on populism here in Thessaloniki. We are happy to share this work with a different and welcoming audience.

I just had the privilege to listen to Judith Butler’s keynote with @genderedform.bsky.social and it was a fantastic reflection of hegemony and resistance

From gender to immigration to the flotilla showing up on the day of atonement, Prof Judith Butler gifted us with in-depth reflections of our current times.

It's a wrap! ->

Sometimes I open journals’ websites and my profile is still with an email I used two universities ago… this is what happens when you move so much…

But the Internet is not a public sphere. Not everyone has equal access, and some voices remain unheard.

So, it's better to talk about alternative publics, like subaltern counterpublics or third spaces, where people organize digital activism.

Can everyone have a voice on the Internet?

The simple answer is no, because the Internet is not a public sphere.

I was teaching a summer school in Germany, so of course we talked Habermas and the public sphere.
