Species that evolved together coexisted less well. We explore some of the traits and trade-offs that might reduce #coexistence (particularly when species compete for essential resources) but also show that overall #community #functions were quite #stable despite changes in traits and interactions.

Follow up to our experimental evolution work asking how #phytoplankton evolve in response to #competition. While life history traits evolved very similarly with intra and interspecific competitors, in #ProcB we show that competition history impacts how these species interact doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

Happy to share our new paper! We tested how species evolve in response to #competition. We tracked the evolution of 3 #phytoplankton species, evolved alone or together. Our main finding is that #density-dependence weakens through #evolution to increase population production. doi.org/10.1002/ece3...
Evolution Under Competition Increases Population Production by Reducing the Density‐Dependence of Net Energy Fluxes and Growth
Using experimental evolution, we determined the impact of intra- versus interspecific competition on three marine phytoplankton species. We found that the species achieved the same evolutionary outco....

It’s increasingly clear that the language of microbial communities is one of resources. Conserved metabolism leads to regular, reliable resource flows across ecosystems—from the gut to wastewater. In complex communities, one serious challenge is: who is eating what?

Thank you so much on behalf of the whole team, Jelena! We came out of this with many more questions to be answered, so yes we do plan follow up work!

My favourite part is that we identified consistent changes in the way algal cells produced energy for growth: evolved cells increased energy production (photosynthesis) but not expenditure (respiration), particularly when resources were scarce-making them better adapted to competitive environments.
