The 'pas' in French 'ne...pas' is cognate with English 'pace'. In Old French it meant 'not...a step' as a way of saying you wouldn't go somewhere at all. From there it was genericized into the modern general negation #langsky
'Up' and 'sub' sound similar but mean the opposite. This is no coincidence. Both have the PIE root *upo, which actually meant 'under'. Only Germanic languages have the sense of above/over
