The fact that right-wingers always think that left-wing protesters are being paid should make you start wondering how much of that is simply projection.

The "traditional" structure of TTRPGs puts an enormous amount of pressure on the GM to learn/refine & very little on the players.

Which is somehow seen as more reasonable than spreading the load of learning/contribution across the whole table.

Broader implications about community in there, y'all.

This would be a good time for Hank to amplify the people who have *been* saying we're that country

*not* to summarize or talk about them, but to platform them directly
“We can’t be a country with a paramilitary secret police because then we would be a nation with a paramilitary secret police” is something my brain genuinely says to me. I need my brain to change as fast as my world and that’s not easy.

Read what you want, darlings, but it's odd when books that happen to feature sex are treated as radioactive and those about murder are treated as general interest.

really it'd be hateful to the rest of the world to ever say he's not a bitch

yeah "hide post" has been invaluable, especially when people I otherwise like still try to get their dunks in

can't wait to get chided by bernard for being anti-murder

Best of 2025: I was fortunate to have a variety of photographic experiences last year beyond my standard mammal/bird photography. It was fun doing more macro, and I even got to try my hand at some underwater in the Galapagos. This shot of a Galapagos Penguin chasing fish was my favorite of the trip.

I still think about the (nonfiction) book that was like “the problem with Ancient Egypt was Big Government.”
Part of the reason why I tend to prefer history books written by women is because women tend not to write like “if lived during X I would’ve done these things differently” and more like “here’s why people made these decisions under these circumstances, which doesn’t mean they were the right ones.”

Work by Fleisig et al finds that listeners attach social stereotypes to Open AI’s voices, including negatively evaluating the personality of voices that they perceive as older.

Excellent work from a group of students at Berkeley 😉

It is a very strange time to be a historian of normal guys who joined the SS and then gleefully enacted unimaginable cruelties in the name of building a racially homogeneous ethnostate. All of my instincts are just screaming at me that the worst is not even close to being here yet.

24 hours of no contact with inside Iran. Not even direct calling my mum’s landline. Seems they have cut off the entire country. No news of my friends who went out to “stroll around and see what’s going on” 25 hours ago. Anxiety reaching high levels.

As a historian of the era, I'm just gonna put it out there that Wellington and Blucher beat Napoleon because they had an era-defining bromance going on.

So when Napoleon tried to spilt their forces, Blucher refused to abandon Wellington and marched to his aid despite his advisors screaming at him.

Yeah the activation energy of getting something consistent and stable is incredibly high there

I've also been wary of the rising antisemitism. Hearing vile shit from the occasional Uncle in my own community has made me be on guard for it. But lots of people don't seem to have that muscle
