As a very successful current EU parliamentarian says "without science you get nowhere, but science by itself is not enough". All my career I have seen important info hidden in research. To see it, distill it, and get it in the right forums (not just media), thats when you get change.

Nothing surprises us in the north of Sweden anymore. Forests are not "growing slower" it is just that there is less land to convert into forest as previously and harvesting has increased in intensity. What this plan will do for lakes and rivers we already know, more eutrophication.

Is it on the track to New Chums beach from Whangapoua?

Sweden not doing enough (anything?) to ensure eels can migrate in rivers and that hydro does the right thing. Thats a pertinent bit of news from "Uppdrag granskning" well done. Did we really need a govt study to prove it, not really. So now lets see some action. www.svt.se/nyheter/gran...

The regional Finnish and Swedish authorities collaborate well in fisheries control. But the central Finnish and Sweden governments must reduce herring quota in the Bothnian Sea. Only a healthy & resilient sea ecosystem will restore salmon in the Torne river.

Video. Closing the net: Finland and Sweden join forces to fight illegal salmon fishing
Video. Rivers in Finland and Sweden are a refuge for Europe's threatened wild salmon. The countries are jointly protecting the species through old-fashioned patrolling and hi-tech surveillance.

No salmon in Swedish rivers AGAIN. In 2023 Sportfiskarna asked the Swedish Agency for Management and Water Agency SwAM (HaV) if they had the goal, tools and plan to react if this was to happen AGAIN. SwAM never replied and here we are AGAIN. SwAM = non adaptive managers www.tv4.se/artikel/5aol...

With climate change upon us fish need need wide buffer zones of mixed mature forest to keep rivers cool. Sweden is unprepared with < 5 m mean zones. River temps are now more often over 20°, critical for salmon and trout, lets put a proper green roof over our rivers.

1 370 school children taken out by Swedish Sportfiskarnas Luleå office to learn about and participate in river restoration for endangered river pearl mussels and sea trout. Big up to my colleagues and LIFE Revives.

The difference between Gulf of Riga and Bothnian herring? Estonia and Latvia wisely manage the Gulf of Riga fishery for fish and fishers, while Sweden and Finland are driving the Bothnian stock into a crash.

30 kg of glass eels worth EUR 200,000 seized at Lisbon Airport. Interestingly, eels where destined for Senegal - likely just a hub to get them to Asia. www.noticiasaominuto.com/pais/2437216...

Silver and Pearls conference gave new ideas on why Baltic salmon returns were much lower than expected in 2023 and clear insight into the need to manage the Baltic on an eco-system base, not just as individual species. Thanks to all who took the time to be there.

Looking at our new wetland restoration project in the Råneå River Valley, a co-operation between forestry company SCA and Sportfiskarna.

Thanks to the BSAC for organising a workshop about cormorants last Friday. To succesfully manage cormorants and threatened fish stocks requires a common knowledge base among all stakeholders.

Today the EU council of ministers decided that you and I cannot go down to the Baltic Sea to catch a cod for dinner. Thats a historical first and is an indictment on our fisheries management. Many are responsible who will take responsibility! The commercial "bycatch" fishing continues!

Waiting for the decision on Baltic fishing quotas for 2024. Time for a change in how we manage herring in Åland Sea and Bothnian Bay.
