CITES currently discusses potential changes to the listings of eels (anguillids). We consider the uncertain impacts of those changes and conclude that a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the expected impacts relative to conservation targets and risk analyses are needed.

In which I, a person who trained over 1,500 early career scientists all over the world in how to use Twitter, tell the scientific community that Twitter sucks now and you should use Bluesky for networking and outreach instead.

New paper!

Social media for fisheries science and management professionals: How to use Bluesky and Instagram, and why you should.

This is the *first* paper in the peer reviewed scientific literature to explain how Bluesky works and how to use it for #SciComm 🧪🦑🐠

“Many people tend to think that the extremists, the nutty MAGA people, are inherently incompetent; and that conversely, when you go up on the competence scale, you are likely to encounter fewer ideological extremists. Vought, however, is a fully competent, utterly committed radical ideologue.”

What are they giving themselves permission to do?

That’s the key question to ask when dealing with the radical forces that are in charge on the Right.

For guys like Vought, the answer is: Whatever it takes, regardless of how extreme. There is no line he won’t cross, no restraining principle.
thomaszimmer.bsky.social
The Right today is dominated by people like Vought who are convinced there is nothing left to conserve – that our moment requires not “conservatism,” but a radical “counter-revolution.”

They have never been so close to power as they are now. And they are determined to abuse power ruthlessly.

We are attending the Wild Salmon Connections conference this week at Fishmongers Hall in London.
Although things may not look great for #salmon populations not all is lost as there is a great deal of work going into reversing that trend.

The chiselmouth is appropriately named: it has a plated bottom lip to "chisel" algae off rocks.

While many sources call them strictly herbivorous, they will take redworms & small flies. They start showing up on local streams in spring & we often catch good numbers of this interesting species.
