I am a supercomputing enthusiast, but I usually don't know what I'm talking about. I post about large-scale infrastructure for #HPC and #AI.
NERSC just got their first rack of the Doudna early access system from Dell--36 nodes of GB200 NVL4 in a 50OU rack. It's TALL!

I use this read-it-later app that continually resurfaces old things I’ve read and found interesting. Headed into 2026 in a job that is all #AI all the time, I feel like this quote is more meaningful than ever. Everyone is an expert, yet so few actually understand.

Maybe when Lux comes online?

Otherwise, I took this snazzy photo of Frontier when I was on-site. Not as good as in-person, but way less travel too.

Wouldn’t be a trip to Oak Ridge National Lab without a leg on one of these lil guys.

We both went to Rutgers. See also this plaque I got from NERSC

This years venue for the #SC25 Tech Program Reception took me back to my childhood, going to my local science center in New Jersey. As has happened all week though, I kept running into friends and colleagues, so I didn’t actually get to see many of the exhibits. Alas!

Andreas Dilger is now working for The Lustre Collective (thelustrecollective.com) after leaving DDN. I am glad to see his leadership continue to drive Lustre into the future. Say what you will about it, Lustre is the standard to which every other #HPC file system is compared.

they must be too busy breaking the yottaflop barrier to staff their booth

When I spent a Thanksgiving week after SC writing the non-MPI layer for Darshan years ago, I thought to myself “surely this work will make me famous!”

I guess my ship finally came in at the PDSW keynote by Rob Ross.

The exhibit hall overflows into the old stadium this year. Fun to watch the setup from afar, but feel bad for the vendors who didn’t get a spot in the main room.

Here’s Rob gesturing about the nuances of PnetCDF. Sadly I didn’t think to snap a photo of @adrianjhpc.bsky.social for completeness.

Chatting with a pal reminded me of a fun pre-SC activity: looking back at old conference takes that aged like milk. Remember this one?

I never heard of Socks Club before this year, they seem to be crushing it. I now have WEKA socks, VAST socks, and Anyscale socks all from them. Made in the USA, and pretty high quality for conference swag. I should invest.

CC @addisonsnell.bsky.social my fellow sock aficionado.

Satya posted a video showing off their GB300 which appears to be in a previous-gen, air-cooled DC. Look at the size of the two liquid-air heat exchangers required to support a single ~120kW NVL72 rack. Not as ridiculous as the 4x used by Meta, but man, this looks silly compared to traditional #HPC.

Time for my vacation in North Dakota to come to an end. I can fly to either Denver or Denver. I guess I’m flying to Denver.

Here is the lutefisk (bottom right) that I had for dinner. If you don’t know what that is, it’s worth looking up. Sounds way worse than it tastes.

Here’s the klub I had for lunch. Hard to see the ~cm of melted butter at the bottom of the container.

I’m in North Dakota this week celebrating Scandinavian heritage.

That liquid on top is butter.

Also, check out the earthworks being done in preparation for their upcoming Doudna system. Going to require a lot of cooling!

Visited some of my old pals at @nersc.bsky.social this afternoon. It feels like a lot has changed, but at the same time, it’s the same old place. I do miss working here, but am glad I now get a chance to visit under the auspices of my new role at VAST.

I assume this +$4b buildout is the huge site next door to the just-disclosed Fairwater site. If you consider this a single "datacenter," this is what a ~gigawatt AI supercomputer is going to look like in 2027.
