However, after the real threat is revealed midway through the film, a dark atmosphere takes over, and the impossibility of Volonté's character escaping his fate becomes painfully clear. The ending offers no hope for a better future. A cynical and grim film without a glimmer of light. I liked it.

The first part consists of measured dialogue exploring the clash between old and new Italian mentalities through the conversations between a judge and Gian Maria Volonté's policeman.
