I love old letters and pictures, which go with my #FavoriteHobby of genealogy.

I dug out an old watercolor I did in a class. It is my first attempt at painting a peony. It didn't come out all that great at all. So the other day, I added the lines with a fine tip, Sharpie, and now it has become something more than the sum of its parts.

This picture was taken out in the country towards dusk. On the left, two wild cherry tree trunks and a few leafy, lower limbs can be seen. Behind the trees stands the west side of a small, red brick building with a pitched roof. The ground is covered in tall clumps of wildflowers that are well past peak. Inside of a Quonset Hut shaped greenhouse. In the very center, in the distance, plays a blues band trio. The lights are mostly shocking pink, which is reflected in the arches supporting the plastic enclosure. It looks and feels like you're in a tunnel. The audience is seated around tables placed on either side of a gray aisle. Listeners are dressed in flannel and puffy vests for the damp fall weather just outside the venue.

One evening at the zoo, I captured these two eagles perched on a tree stump and tree limb behind the fencing of their enclosure. The sky behind them is pale purple. The eagle on the left is perched higher than the eagle on the right. They have maintained their dignity in these less than ideal circumstances.

The sun was setting behind my house. It made the clouds look pale orange, and the sky periwinkle blue. The trees on the left side of the picture look black, as does the first and second floor roofs of the house in the lower right-hand corner.

This is a piece of handmade paper art I learned to make recently. It is abstract and very colorful. The dominant color is deep yellow. Small pieces of paper scraps are distributed in a whirling design that reminds me of a woman dancing in a long evening gown. The colors of the scraps are purple, orange, navy blue, pale blue, pink, green, and red.

I took this picture in my wildflower garden this week. It shows a milkweed pod, dried out, and bursting open with silk and seeds ready to be taken by the wind. The background is blurred and dried out goldenrod with areas of yellow, green, and brown. Just to the right of the white silk fibers is a skinny, vertical stem, light brown, and dried out as well.

Chinese light show on display after dark at the Buffalo Zoo. Against the mostly black background is a diagonal row of silk-covered wire shapes lit from within. This is a forest scene. The tall, dark maple tree trunks reach out to the sky, their crowns beyond sight out of the frame. Through the trees, light yellowish green leaves from smaller trees and brush is visible along the bottom of the frame. Atop that is the whitish glow from a setting sun. Nearly three quarters of the picture shows the bright green of leaves that haven't yet started turning their autumn colors. And behind all that peeks some patches of blue sky and clouds.

I took this picture in November 2024 in Asheville, NC. I'm standing on the shoulder of one of the roads that goes alongside the French Broad River. Starting at upper left, a concrete bridge covered in graffiti stretches to the other river bank. Narrow archways under the bridge are clogged with massive amounts of debris from Hurricane Helene. Lots of smashed pieces of wood, plastic, outdoor furniture, as well as tires and all kinds of miscellaneous trash float on the water with no where else to go. It all waits for human intervention in order to be disposed of properly.
