How did I spend the last 60 years reading science fiction and not know this?

Bovril: A meaty staple's strange link to cult science fiction
Invented to make beef last long journeys to market, Bovril became a famous British kitchen staple. Less well-known is its link to an odd, pioneering science fiction novel.

Judges interpret and apply the law and can issue rulings. They rely on the Executive branch to enforce those rulings. If the Executive branch decides to ignore those rulings then you no longer have a Republic. “An Empire of Laws, and not of Men.”

What am I missing?

Giant Indian Squirrel, the old hippy squirrel that the first time you see it you instantly look it up to see if it's been photoshopped, and, oh my, it hasn't!
Giant Indian Squirrel is so beautiful.

MAGA: lOoK how FaSt cOlUmBia fOldEd. ‘MEriCa is bAcK!

Fun Fact: Under Biden, Colombia accepted 475 deportation flights—over 120 in 2024 alone… and not one threat of tariffs from either side.

Even “MAGA wins” are really MEGA losses.

Let me get this straight. Petro calls for dignified transit. Trump threatens tariffs. Petro smacks Trump in a post threatening his own higher tariffs. And Trump agrees to what Petro asked for. And yet NYT is calling this *Petro* backing down?

I'm not a religious person, but that doesn't mean I can't have heroes who are.
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

Nobody can prove either way whether Musk's gestures were a nazi salute or not. What should not be debatable is that he is smart enough to know that it could and would be interpreted as such. And he did it anyway. Intentionally. Twice.

I keep seeing folk accusing Trump of being weak for moving his inauguration inside because of the cold. I don't think that's the reason at all (anyway they could all burn copies of the constitution to stay warm) Real reason? He's been told crowd size may be iffy.

Why are the MAGAe who wanted someone to run the country "like a business" and eliminate the Department of Education so surprised when the new DOGE team explain how much more cost efficient it is to use H1Bs than to educate Americans?

Let's be clear about something. Oligarchs didn't capture our democracy. We gave it to them because too many of us couldn't handle the idea of a black woman as president.

I have no idea why, but this is so I don't know what.

Protect the fetus, arrest and deport the child is just so on brand.
The mass deportation of undocumented immigrants was one of Donald Trump’s principal campaign promises in 2024. But will the 47th president also go after major restrictions in legal avenues for immigration, including the bedrock principle of “birthright citizenship”?
Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Threat Shows His True Target
While he ran on expelling undocumented immigrants, he wants to challenge the idea of who’s really American.

I've done a lot of interviews over the years and asked hundreds of candidates why they think they are the best person for the job. I have to admit "I promise I'll stop drinking if I get it" is a new one on me.

Couldn't agree more that there was no cheating in the 2024 election. There was not in 2020 either. The results are what they are. That doesn't mean though that many who voted for Trump aren't going to find out that they were cheated.

When we get to the end of the 'to do' list there is one final task we all face. We deserve to be able to chose dignity over agony.
“Hope is a strange thing when you’re dying.”

On a day of very powerful interviews, on both sides of the assisted dying debate, this one stood out.

With thanks to Nathaniel for taking the time to speak to me.

Isn't the bigger story here the fact that the islamic state has biological weapons engineers?
The Times - An RAF Reaper drone fired two hellfire missiles at an ISIS biological weapons engineer because human rights laws prevented special forces troops from detaining him. www.thetimes.com/uk/defence/a...

The Mercy of Gods (The Captive's War Book 1)
by "James S. A. Corey" is an awesome read! And I just heard it's been picked up by Amazon to develop a series with the crew who did The Expanse.

And yet another printed RC plane. This one a work in progress. My shiny object syndrome usually has me working on a bunch of things at once!

That's what I thought might happen. Many perpetually angry at their lot.
I can’t tell you how different it is on X now after so many people have left. I have always followed mostly right-wing accounts because I cover them, and they are running out of people to pick fights with. So they’re just mostly fighting with each other.
November 23, 2024 at 10:35 PM
I must say this really is much a much more rewarding experience than that "other place". What happens though when the angry, constantly outraged, conspiracy ridden folk find out they've only got each other to shout at and abuse? Oh well, in the mean time here's a plane I built the old fashioned way.
