Fediverse is its own thing but what atproto does is to let hosting be unopinionated and push moderation and curation and stuff out to its own layer. Lately I'm seeing people talk like bsky hosting should be like a mastodon server (opinionated, and if you don't like it move) which is a step backwards

9) People are, all things considered, pretty good.

I see twenty thousand people a day, and maybe two of them are assholes. Even on a stressful day, even in an unfamiliar environment, even hungry and tired and on a timer.

That's a *much* better ratio than folks realize.

Hang on, how are they quashing user-led decentralized moderation? (Not at all saying they're not, just hadn't heard this before)
goat.navy
Friends we must purge the mastodonian heresy

This is also how I see it. However I don't think it solves any kind of problem for people who are mad that Jay hasn't banned the bad person. They don't want to select a different legal code, they want the bad person removed from the internet
goat.navy
OK so imagine it's the decentralized future. My space is AngryProgressiveSky because I migrated but most of my feed is coming from outside AngryProgressiveSky and my curation is coming from feeds that are unrelated to AngryProgessiveSky. It's not really clear to me what work this "space" is doing.

I don't think we can pitch decentralization as a solution to people who want a bad account banned because they're not trying to fix what they see in their own feeds, they're trying to control what I see in mine.

Fixing their own feeds is already accomplished by blocking and going on with your day

i just dont get it like do people really think that the people working on bluesky are like insanely uber rich, that they hand-pick accounts to cause drama or something. its like a plague of wildly conspiratorial thinking while every other platform is non-stop stripping users of their rights

This has been happening in Japan, they way over-built golf courses back in the bubble in the 80s. Some huge beautiful megasolar farms on them now
Huge gorgeous megasolar farm, restaurant in the club house

The fact that these people are going to do this same shit in someone else's replies is where this whole thing started.

The ideal resolution would be that they'd get annoyed enough at Jay to go and do it on someone else's website. This worked to some extent with the "we keep going until" people
goat.navy
Agree but there's a sub-category which is over-represented on bsky: non-technical users with contempt for the technology they're using, and it's right and normal to laugh at these people
goat.navy
He hardly ever posts and when he does it's mostly mid liberal punditry. But the account has a special cultural significance and if you follow it you it'll get you on some of the better blocklists which makes your feed nicer

cool fact, my self-hosted PDS is ~500 microseconds away from my apartment over the internet and that PDS is ~500 microseconds away from its S3 endpoint where my blobs live

this is compared to the ~67-75ms jump from my apartment to bsky's US-east PDSs

the site is a LOT snappier for me now :)

hello from my own PDS :)

Yeah, I kind of assumed eth_sign was dead
goat.navy
omg you're right, what is in the test tube
goat.navy
I've made some progress on a thing to make an account with a self-custodied rotation key from a browser and give you a seed phrase for it, haven't tried connecting it to a PDS yet but hopefully it'll work

Would you like to see a praying mantis skeleton in a test tube with a light underneath that changes colour

Living in Japan I occasionally wake up at a weird time and see the site in Peak American Posting Hours, the Discover feed is very bad indeed and even my Following feed is nasty. (Mutuals feed is always wonderful)

When I searched for brutalism in Niigata not much turned up but there was this incredible building somebody made to put their buddhas in.

The inside is just breathtaking but I can't show you because they strictly forbid photos, or hand sketches. I'm not sure I'm even allowed to tell you about it
Like a Japanese outdoor walkway but it's concrete and curved Building sort of like something from central Asia, but not, I don't know how to say it
