Just a reminder: Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the sole power to declare war. (We've seen executive over-reach too many times.)

For over 200 years there was a consensus, a bipartisan consensus, that the US military should not be used as a political prop. Sadly this is no longer true.
