I can relate to the impulse to hyper normalize in our current environment. It’s a natural way to spontaneously self-regulate. It may be necessary to function on a daily basis. But it’s also good to recognize so we can all take action when needed.

COBOL is a genuinely archaic programming language. But trying to do this in a rush is INSANE. And you can bet a huge, huge number of things are going to break. Even in very simple code bases, understanding the levels of dependencies built up over decades takes a huge amount of time.
