there are complicating factors economically that do drag on people, but “24/7 access to media, ideological silos, local news desserts, and social isolation means people will hate economy/immigration/crime/etc., no matter the objective reality” is something not enough people have come to terms with

Right now, one way of reading public opinion, you might even say a popularist understanding, is that the public is pretty unambiguously calling for a Volcker-style recession, and yet color me skeptical that an actual recession that brought prices down would be very popular.
