29 May 1919: A total solar eclipse confirmed Einstein’s General Relativity thanks to 'The Eddington experiment' that determined the deflection of the starlight next to the Sun.

"Einstein, Eddington and the 1919 eclipse" by Peter Coles: articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/pdf/2001ASPC...
"Black Sun: On 29 May 1919, the new moon covered the blazingly bright disk of the Sun. The astronomers back then were already able to quite impressively photograph the shadow dance. This historical photo clearly shows the corona, the outer gas atmosphere of the Sun."

Image: Inverted image of the eclipse on May 29, 1919.

Credit: F. W. Dyson, A. S. Eddington, and C. Davidson/Public domain The photo shows Sir Arthur Eddington (right) and Einstein sitting on a bench, engaged in a friendly discussion.
The photo of the two scientists was taken in 1930 at the University of Cambridge in Great Britain.

And a nice write-up in @natureportfolio.nature.com news:

www.nature.com/articles/d41...

"The researchers found a way to encode these different parameters into a single ytterbium ion trapped in a vacuum using pulsating electric fields..."

A recent paper led by collaboration members Yoonsoo Kim and Elias Most (both at Caltech) is in @aasnova.org today! This work explores the formation of strongly magnetized "monster" shocks and a transient "black hole pulsar" state from mergers of a magnetized neutron star and a black hole.

Our community flourished because of 3 NSF grants we earned 10 years ago.

We were awarded another one to grow the community and move us to sustainability without federal support.

Each day that passes brings worry that we won't be able to do so.

Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

Terrible news for our colleagues and friends at @phetsims.bsky.social

Please support them if you can.

They are an incredible resource for the #physics and #iteachphysics community.

1/7 💔 We are very disappointed to announce that on April 25, NSF terminated a $1.5M PhET grant – our Pathways to Open Source Ecosystems Phase II grant for advancing PhET’s SceneryStack project. Learn how this impacts our work and how you can help: bit.ly/PhETNSF2025

@phetsims.bsky.social singlehandedly got #ITeachPhysics through emergency remote instruction in 2020.

So for the past 15th years or so, maybe longer, I've been using phET simulations in my classes. The NSF just cut at 1.5 M grant to phET because I guess the government doesn't find these educational tools worthwhile anymore. Cool.
