We're doing a group home because we love him so damn much, we want him to have a safe little spot with his stuffed people, and everything that makes him happy to go to, when the worst moments of his life eventually happen.

I'm not immoral. I'm not even a well put together mortal. I'm 50. My body hurts a lot most days. And Agent K can cook a meal, work a phone, dress and bathe himself. He can tell you to stop, he doesn't like that. He can ask for help.

It's just time.

Mom made me promise when K was diagnosed that as soon as he was old enough and as independent as we could make him, we would start looking for group home. It's a long process with waiting lists and staff that can turn us on a home.

Some went into nursing homes, psych wards, state run group homes.

It was profoundly traumatic for my mom's clients. Sometimes she would never see them again. Sometimes they came back emotionally broken, the change in circumstances too painful.

And so on the very day they lost their beloved caretakers, they also got yanked out of their home environments. Some sent to other relatives that they may or may not of known well. Some went into Adult Foster care which is a thing for disabled adults who can't live independently.

My mom worked for years at an Easter Seals sheltered workshop with the multiple disabled.

Here clients were loved by their families. LOVED.

And one after another she saw aging parents die. And these adults couldn't care for themselves.

Spent the day with the ex filling out paperwork for legal guardianship and the NJ DDD program.

We're starting the process of group home visits and daily activity programs.

I don't feel ready, but it's time.

I wish there were scholarships for our parents as they retire and age. All the therapies, assisted living, and nursing home care cost an arm and a leg.
