Below is a composition notebook with 4 tabs sticking out. They read: Power and Politics in US Government, Real World College Math, Modern World History, and Intro to Psychology. To the right is a yellow post it note that says "take a top tier college course for just $25." Behind these objects are fall leaves. In the bottom right corner there is a brown notebook, and in the top left corner there is a matcha latte.

To make sense of the world, we need to understand cause and effect. Like, does caring for your plants make you happy, or does being happy make you likelier to take care of your plant?

Statistics is how we get to the bottom of how those things influence or depend on each other.

Statistics can help you win arguments! If your friend starts making claims they saw online like “lesbians have a 72% divorce rate,” you’ll be able to point out how actually that stat is from a study of same sex divorces. Meaning lesbians make up 72% of gay divorces, not divorces overall.

It can help you find a job!

Statistics is used in all types of professions from anthropologists to politicians. In the age of information, TONS of jobs are about making use of data – whether it’s search data that helps you build a new algorithm, demographic data that helps you boost sales!

It will help you spot misinformation!

Unfortunately, not everyone using statistics is doing it honestly. It’s where we get that line about the three kinds of lies: "lies, damned lies, and statistics."

If you don’t know your way around statistics, it can be really easy to get tricked by them.
