Is royal icing the one you boil? I think I might simply have been told the wrong name for it, or maybe we call different things by the same name over here, lol (I have definitely had cookies and stuff with the very hard royal icing, I just assumed they were the same sort of thing!)

Huh, so do they just put it on really thick over there? The way I remember, it would be a thin crunchy layer with a slightly less-solid inner layer, then the cake! I should find out it my aunt still has that recipe...

I'm confused by this because what I thought was royal icing was the exquisite crunchy glaze icing grandma used to use on the chocolate cake she would make for my dad's birthday at Christmas, and buttercream as the cheap, cloying stuff you get on a cake from the grocery store? 🤔

There was a point when I was.. idk, ~14 when I was babysitting and started screaming at my siblings because I was frustrated and suddenly my brain was like "wait, hol up, I'm being JUST LIKE HER, EW" and ever since then it has been a conscious goal of mine to not behave like my mother. 😅

I think humans have being using holidays as an excuse for treats longer than we've had capitalism, tbh!

I don't feel comfortable expressing strong emotions because my mom was emotionally unregulated and my trauma is largely from her outbursts and screaming. 🙃
I was also punished at times for expressing strong emotions, but I really think her negative example was more salient.
