It's great that some of the charges against journalist @bubbaprog.xyz were thrown out. We needed some good news.

We wrote last year about why the rest should be tossed too. It's not journalists' job to keep corporations' secrets, and it's not computer fraud when they report what they find online.

Yeah, I find it hard to predict because can depend on what clerk in the compliance department gets the intake and how rigorously they examine it. And also they have limited information with which to assess some of the warrants. They should all push back more on novel surveillance like geo fencing.

The Electronic Communications Privacy Act prohibits providers from turning over user data without some kind of legal order, depending on type of data and whether the user got notice in advance. Once providers got the legal orders (warrant for content), then yes, they would almost always disclose.

...oh yeah, and the guy whose life's work is claiming that white people are superior to other races. He's not "a right-wing academic who has promoted eugenic views". He's a racist. And he's not responsible for "advancing" the non-story story, the NYT is.
