"This is me. This is Jane."

As we look back on what Dr. Jane accomplished, let's also look forward – and let's see how we can advance the mission she started. Because the Jane Goodall Institute and its chapters are bigger than any one person.

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

I co-wrote Trump’s first anti-terrorism plan in 2017-18. He’s not trying to stop “left-wing” terrorism. He is staging it.

His troop deployments are a false flag — meant to provoke a response in order to justify harsh crackdowns.

This is now very obvious.

Attempts to deploy federalized National Guardsmen to Oregon, California, & Illinois, also, signs that Trump, or at least someone around him, is starting to think seriously about the Insurrection Act. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

This afternoon, Donald Trump was asked about invoking the Insurrection Act: “I’d do it if it was necessary.

Incredibly important & extremely articulate argument here. Worth re-reading a few times to appreciate the gravity, strength & calm weight of reasoning—reasonableness itself— in the midst of reckless power. “Deference,” indeed, “is not blind obedience.” Grateful.

Journalist Edward R. Murrow used his platform on CBS to criticize the witch hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.

This is what real journalism should do — hold power to account, not capitulate to it.

This is not a picture of sitting and doing nothing.

This is a picture of peering into the depths of what so many fear to see, fear to admit, fear to face.

James Baldwin said “it is the innocence which constitutes the crime” (The Fire Next Time, 1963, p. 6).

Here’s a toast to hope…that we can outlast the Hatfields & McCoys, defuse the tinderbox, & find ways to reinvigorate what Lincoln called “a patient confidence in the ultimate justice of the people” (1st Inaugural) & then asked: “Is there any better or equal hope in the world?"

This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Community action works.

I don’t live in Greenwood, but think this is a great idea and one that I hope spreads to other towns and cities. We need civic dialogue circles! Great plan, too, to pair snacks and security assurances. All the best!

The only things I can find to respond to positively and sanely each day, as I read a variety of news stories, are expressions of visual art such as this painting. Everything else induces hyperventilation. With art I can breathe in the living world. I can also walk outside & not lose my mind.

We certainly need a peace portal for liberty and the recovery of brotherly love in resistance to the current crusade of hatred, destruction. Cliches dissolve in seconds. The real work takes one’s whole life. The nautilus has deep spiritual significance (see L. Harjo’s Spiral to the Stars (2019).

Sanders: I am not a great fan of the affordable care act. I believe in medicare for all. I think that health care is a human right, but I will be damned if I'm going to see people in Vermont and around this country see a doubling in their premiums.
