💙 Want to join the movement? Call on the NZ Govt to help create global ocean sanctuaries

After over twenty years of campaigning, it’s happened. The Global Ocean Treaty will pass into force - on Saturday! The Treaty paves the way for the creation of vast ocean sanctuaries on the high seas - including in the Tasman Sea between Aotearoa and Australia.
January 14, 2026 at 11:09 PM
This is a huge win for the ocean - and for all of us. After years of relentless people power got us this far - will you use your voice to push governments to turn the Treaty into action and swiftly create a vast network of ocean sanctuaries?

The Treaty provides a pathway for creating areas of the ocean across the globe that are protected from harmful human activity like industrial fishing - including bottom trawling.
January 13, 2026 at 2:36 AM
Decades of campaigning, organising, and showing up led to the Treaty being agreed by governments at the United Nations in 2023. Over two years later and the movement of millions of people around the world have continued to work tirelessly to get it over the line.

🎉GOOD NEWS: The Global Ocean Treaty is officially entering into force on 17 January. That's this weekend!!

This didn’t happen overnight. It happened because people cared, organised and kept going.

We brought 2000kg of slime to Fonterra HQ to protest their drinking water pollution!

New Zealand has too many cows, and they're causing a nitrate crisis in lakes, rivers, and drinking water.

Take action NOW and help put an end to intensive dairy expansion: greenpeace.nz/nxdp87

At 11pm on Friday night, under the cover of darkness, the Luxon Government made it easier for foreign corporations to buy and exploit New Zealand’s most ecologically and culturally sensitive land - including conservation land, lakebeds and wāhi tapu sites. 🧵

Three Greenpeace activists were removed by police after protesting Fonterra’s shareholder meeting. The activists set up a nitrate contamination tent and dumped two tonnes of simulated “toxic” slime at Fonterra HQ, forcing shareholders to walk through it.

BREAKING: Fonterra’s head offices have been placed under quarantine by Greenpeace, as a metric tonne of slime is oozing out of the front of the building! This is ground zero for the nitrate emergency. #nzpol #freshwater #agribusiness #nitratecontamination

⚠️🚨Fonterra HQ seems to be under quarantine this morning 🚨⚠️

The Greenpeace Quarantine Unit is on the scene. We’ll have more information soon.

The Government has unveiled two new bills to replace the RMA. Ministers are talking about decks and front doors - but the RMA is what protects land, air, water and wildlife from mining, dams and industrial farming. These reforms weaken environmental protections.🧵

Final day! Today is the last day to make a submission on the long term protection of the hoiho penguin.

The Government has extended the emergency ban on set net fishing around Otago for another nine months. This will give breathing space to protect the endangered hoiho population.

Deep sea mining companies are desperate to exploit minerals at the bottom of the Pacific ocean. To get their way, they’re making false claims about the economic and environmental benefits this destructive industry will bring.

Two years. One Government. A full-blown War on Nature. They’ve:
• Legalised killing kiwi
• Polluted our rivers by gutting freshwater rules
• Raised fish catch limits
• Reopened the door to oil drilling
• Welcomed new coal mining like it’s the 1800s
And so much more.

We all want the Hauraki Gulf - Tīkapa Moana to thrive. Right now the marine park is in trouble. It's time to ban destructive bottom trawling and give the Hauraki a chance. Join the call now: greenpeace.nz/pnmgr3

The Luxon Government's reckless rampage is ramping up - make a submission now!
The Government have just proposed making the Fast Track Act even worse - if
passed these changes risk putting Aotearoa and its oceans at the mercy of
foreign mining giants and corporate polluters.

We're bringing our free nitrate contamination water testing programme to communities in Southland and Canterbury next week!

Simply bring 200mls of your drinking water in a clean container and we'll test it for nitrate contamination while you wait.

Fonterra have just shown that they view New Zealand as a giant milk powder factory, making low value products to be shipped overseas and used in KitKats.

Share this video to tell Fonterra that New Zealanders are fed up with them milking us dry and selling us out.

Digging deeper to make your power bill steeper - the Luxon Government and the power companies are in it together, and guess who’s footing the bill?

The deep sea is one of the last untouched parts of the Earth and we still don’t know what’s down there. Mining could cause irreversible damage.

Greenpeace Aotearoa fights alongside the Cook Islanders, who peacefully protested. They want a Pacific blue line drawn against this destructive industry

STANDING IN SOLIDARITY

“People here in the Cook Islands face the same fight we’re up against in Aotearoa. In both cases, Indigenous Peoples are leading the resistance against seabed miners, to protect ancestral territories and waters for future generations.”

EXTRACTIVE COLONIALISM

Trump signed an order to fast track deep sea mining in April. The Nautilus ship is conducting U.S. funded research. Lousia says the research will be used to advance seabed mining.

“Any government or corporate looking to exploit us in this way is no true partner of ours”

STOP THE CORPORATE TAKEOVER

“We take a stand against the exploitation of our people and resources.”
"Seabed mining will lead to the destruction of our home environments and put our Indigenous rights, cultural ways of living, and wellbeing at risk."
