I would really love to see a book about MLK similar to Lincoln’s Body, about how his image has been used (and abused) after death as a stand-in for the whole civil rights movement, and as a way to place it safely in the past.

Excerpt from Addiction by Design, by Natasha Dow Schüll, page 171: Gamblers most readily enter the zone at the point where their own actions become indistinguishable from the functioning of the machine. They explain this point as a kind of coincidence between their intentions and the machine's responses. "My eyes feel like they're lining up the bars on the screen—I see them turning, and then stop, like they're under my influence," said Lola of machines' reels. "It's like you go around in them and you decide where to stop." Mollie spoke of her video poker play in terms of a communicative vibration: "Sometimes I feel this vibration between what I want and what happens." It is "as if the player 'shadows' the machine events," a psychologist of gambling has written, "playing in tune with the machine." Randall used the same wording, likening his gambling to the playing of music, an activity in which person and instrument are harmonically synchronized to a common beat. Although the decisive act of a gambler starts the reels spinning or the cards flipping, the immediacy of the machine's response joins human and machine in a hermetically closed circuit of action such that the locus of control-and thus, of agency-becomes indiscernible. What begins as an autonomous act thus "becomes part of the automatic actions and reaction of the doer," as the game scholar Gordon Calleja writes in his study of online digital games, resulting in "a loss of the sense of self."

Reading Natasha Dow Schüll’s Addiction by Design, on how casinos and slot machines are designed to draw gamblers into the zone. This section on hallway design STRONGLY reminded me of Temple Grandin’s designs for slaughterhouses.
Excerpt from page 45 of Addiction by Design: Corridors draw people in not only by way of cues but also by way of curves. Casino patrons "resist perpendicular turning," Friedman notes, for "commitment is required to slow down and turn 90 degrees into a slot aisle."As a fellow industry member recalls, the reduction of "sharp lines" and the introduction of "very frequent curvature lines" became a strategic part of the casino's design repertoire in the mid-1980s. "The role of the uninterrupted, curvilinear pathway couldn't be more important," commented an architect during a panel at the 2009 Global Gaming Expo. Friedman advises that curving should begin outside a casino property. "The entry to the property should beckon and invite, and should curve gently off the street or sidewalk. Driving from the street into the property entrance should be effortless." Like the road that glides directly through the sites on Mollie's map, there should be no right angles, and no stop signs. As sections of the Las Vegas Strip have become more pedestrian, outdoor walkways and long moving conveyor belts have extended the principle of the curve to a walking scale, rolling out onto sidewalks and carrying players into the property from the street. When Friedman slightly curved the right angle of an entrance corridor to one property, he was "amazed at the magnitude of change in the pedestrians' behavior" (the percentage who entered increased from one-third to nearly two-thirds). Inside casinos, "passageways should keep twisting and turning through gradual, gentle curves and angles that smooth out the shifts in direction." Curving, narrowing chute leading cattle into a slaughterhouse. They can’t see far ahead, are pushed forward by fellow cattle, and reassured by rubbing their sides against the curves.

Watching the new Spielberg trailer and it already disappoints. I lived in/near Kansas City for a few decades, and that does not look like a plausible weather graphic. DO BETTER STEVEN.

There are many other examples of this form of power. Consider the phenomenon commonly described as "the privatization of public functions." It appears in the increasing numbers of private schools as well as in private operation of public hospitals, private assumption of public transportation, and private absorption of public welfare func-tions, to mention only the most obvious. The natural reaction is to assume that because a public function has been transferred to private hands the power of the government has been reduced-and even that power itself has disappeared because what was formerly an exercise of public power has now become a mere matter of management and eco-nomics. What in fact occurs through privatization is not the elimination of power but the elimination of politics, that is, the public discussion and argument over how power is to be used, for what ends, and who is responsible. What is true of the kind of empowerment careers bring is true also at a subtler level. The pressures for a narrowly practical, vocational, and preprofessional education are usually aimed most often at public higher education, at junior colleges and public universities and col-leges, in other words at those institutions in which most citizens are educated. When curricula are shaped overwhelmingly by job consid-erations, students are being denied significant forms of power. They are being culturally deprived in a deep sense; but this is not under-stood, because literature, philosophy, history, and art are assumed to be essentially frivolous, however amusing or ornamental they may be. They are, in other words, conceived as being completely unrelated to power. They don't pay off, they don't produce anything tangible, and they clutter résumés. Yet the very subjects being dismissed are precisely the ones from which one's inevitably narrow personal experience can be deepened, broadened, and diversified. These subjects tell us what it means to be a person, and they tell us important things about power in all of its forms—intimate as well as impersonal, social as well as political, material as well as intellectual and spiritual; power arising from class, sex, race; power in its aesthetic forms. They tell us too about the extraordinarily diverse ways that human beings have organized their lives, individually and collectively, or that they have confronted their lot, measured their mortality, protested their fate, and expressed their solidarity. To be deprived of this range of experience is to be ignorant, not practical; to be made more powerless, not more competent. Excerpt from Sheldon S.
