I am not hungry (ren note: why does dark horse tl hate contractions??) ww: ... ... Spikey, huh? I don't blame you. with those huge wings and all... -ww and meryl contemplate vash's Huge Wings lol- continuation of the scene in the previous image. ww: you haven't asked, "what is he?" meryl: huh? ww: well...even if you did ask, I couldn't answer. but a normal person would ask, right? where those wings came from. meryl: ... ... what? you know?! ww: no, i just said i *didn't* know. meryl: [grumbline] why am i even talking to this guy? ww: but...even if i don't know the answers, i do know this. his right arm contains an incredibly powerful weapon. [meryl flashes back to zazie saying 'twice, calamity has struck us cold.'] you know what kind of guy he is. but he's also the trigger to a power that could end the world. your life's at risk just by getting involved. you understand? I love that wolfwood offers meryl food while saying the curry rice isn’t that great, yet he heartily eats it (unlike Meryl who says she has no appetite). He gives the air of being relatively calm about what happened at the dragon’s nest, recognizing Vash’s good intentions tempered by his terrible power; but, notably, his sunglasses hide his most telling and honest feature, his eyes (footnote that there’s something about him keeping his sunglasses on that is softening, too, given how intense his eyes frequently are when we see them). His true turmoil over what he witnessed becomes clear soon. There’s a steadiness to him in this conversation that feels both like he’s giving Meryl a place to lean against, and like he thinks being reserved with his own emotion will lend strength to his insistence that Meryl and Milly leave. I think Wolfwood is often caught in this space, between the need to be immovable, relentless, steady, and his own live-wire emotions that drive him forward; I think, too, that this dichotomy causes him to feel like certain emotions are allowable because they power him forward while others have to be tightly filtered if he is to stay strong enough to carry through (he will learn, eventually, that when he falters Vash will be there). This often parallels Vash’s struggle in its own way but a bit inverted. i.e. for Wolfwood, he calls up anger as a rallying force; for Vash, anger bubbles up, threatens the singular moral pedestal he’s put rem’s life and death on. (1/2) Anyway, back to Wolfwood cutely shoveling curry into his mouth. Rather than just a scene where he somewhat breezily eats a mediocre lunch and mother-hen harps on Meryl to get out while she can (bc it is also that hahaha), the way this scene directly follows dragon’s nest + his self-presentation with Meryl + how shortly after this he points his gun to Vash on the rooftop shows moreso, to me, that this meal is a grounding for Wolfwood between two character-altering interactions for him; a brief respite within the frightening reflections about and implications of Vash’s power. It is, maybe, a domestic and regulating comfort of its own that the curry rice is mundane, that he has time to sit and finish his bowl without the chaotic intervention of a fight. Also, so sorry, one last thing, is that there are many small instances where we see it takes Wolfwood an amount of time to process and sit with things that deeply affect him. One other example is after rai dei, when Vash reprimands Wolfwood and they carry on but it’s much later, when he’s alone and smoking and unbuttoned in his hotel room, that he is able to chew things over and start to feel his understanding of the world and what’s possible through Vash shift. these small interstitial moments seem important for him for processing. I like that this scene starts in media res and the camera is from Meryl’s pov arriving to Wolfwood already there—it really compounds the presentation of himself that we’re seeing. and I especially love that the camera leaves Wolfwood here to himself, with the rest of his meal to finish, the pov continuing to follow Meryl and then Vash. He needs his brooding time!! waugh I love him. (2/2)
