It appears to be Lycogala sp., also known as a slime mold.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. Rose of Sharon is semi-cold hardy and has survived many snowy winters outdoors. My garden is not large, so this Rose of Sharon is in a pot. I've been taking care of it for over 10 years, and I'm very attached to it.

When I touch the abandoned nest, it feels like dry paper. It is made from plant fibre and bee saliva, similar to paper. According to the entomology book, once all the larvae have hatched and the workers have either left or died, the queen will leave the nest and sometimes survive over the winter.

This evening, only one wasp remains in their house, which is made from paper hexagons. It seems it is waiting for the last juveniles to hatch.
