Less common varieties of 'nog:

Hognog—bacon drippings & milk

Bognog—bog water au lait

Balnog—for those who have drunk too greedily and too deep, who long to taste the dark fires of Udûn, flavored not with nutmeg & vanilla but with shadow & flame

Neggnog—are you really going for ANOTHER glass?

The first thing that's always bothered me about the incessant Betterhelp Youtube/podcast ads wasn't the sketchiness of conducting therapy online with "therapists" that might not be certified.

It's that they think you need help spelling "help" but not "better."

Immediately turned me off from them.

Started my December right: listening to Scott Walker's final masterpiece, Bish Bosch, which closes with an ode to Nicolai Ceaucescu, a dictator so hated by his own people that he was executed on Christmas Day by a firing squad who didn't wait for the order to fire. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yUs...

Listening to Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald today. It's one of those songs that, the more I listen to it, the more powerful it gets. And I've been hearing it for decades.

Anyway, it's one of the greatest songs ever written, and if you disagree, we can't be friends.

Just listened to Lily Allen's West End Girl, and...my god. 10/10 perfect album. Every track is a banger and still cohesive with the whole. I don't listen to enough new music to have a tier list or whatever, but this is the best new album I've heard in years. Beautiful, scathing work of art.

I simultaneously love and hate how each new thing I do on bass is accompanied by "and it fucking hurt."

Today's exhibit: I played a two-octave chromatic scale up and down my A string for the first time today. And it fucking hurt.

I am suddenly filled with the urge to play a D&D character who is an inveterate multi-level marketing scamme--I mean merchant. NOT a pyramid schemer. A direct sales girlboss goddess who has an exponentially increasing income stream from every town she travels through.

Playing Final Fantasy V in 2025 hits different, with Cid's grandson's name being Mid...no wonder his parents aren't in the picture.

I just finished Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. What an astounding book 1. Beautifully realized world, fleshed out characters, that looming sense of dread that you know will pay off but don't know in what way until the moment.

I have the distinct feeling this series will be a favorite of mine.

Why are so many AI people trying to get into hobbies they absolutely despise? "Fuck reading just give me the summary", Fuck art just make it for me", "I got ideas but fuck actually writing" like??? Maybe just find something you enjoy doing and do that?????

It's really fucked up the news media at large is searching so hard for humanity in machines, while systematically denying humanity to Palestinians, trans people, immigrants, and other persecuted people

Look, we know Amazon/Audible will always want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but Audible's new model is actively screwing authors. So I'm just throwing this out there into the void in the hopes that it might help in some small way. chng.it/MMNKstMswW
Can you spare a minute to help this campaign?

I have started Hollow Knight tonight, and I am admittedly a bad 2D platformer, but I am determined to get through this because it's been a beautiful experience so far, even if I can't yet get past the first boss.

I know why the devs spent seven years on the follow-up; it was for the joy of it.
I haven't played Hollow Knight, but with all the stuff I'm seeing about the team behind it, I might just have to.

Okay. I think I'm writing a book now.

(Said as though to convince myself.)

But yeah, I think I have something that I'm actively working on.

This is weird.

Suzan speaks the truth, but forgot the geese. We shall not forget the geese.
My upcoming dark fantasy novel 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐒 will be released July 24.

Today I'm featuring a wonderful blurb I received from the original garden goth, Suzan Palumbo / @sillysyntax.bsky.social‬, author of Countess. 🙏

Explain your @.

My real name is Geoffrey, and being American it's an unusual spelling. I also had a good flautist friend in music school with a sense of humor, who would randomly shout "GROOF" or some such mutilation of my name, and I just chose to take it as my internet name.
Explain your @.

It's one of my favourite books by my all-time favourite author. A wonderful story featuring the character of Death from the Discworld series. It also has one of my favourite quotes of all time:

"What can the harvest hope for, if not for the care of the Reaper Man?"

I think I freaked my mom out, exhibit 529-B: When she mentioned her concert band was doing a medley of Fantasia, I started singing that chugging string bit early on in The Rite of Spring from memory, complete with brass and wind stabs.

I woke up like 15 minutes ago and my day is already set.
