Dear Ms. White,
I listen to your fascinating March 7 Stanford lecture with great interest. I am a believer and Investor in crypto so hearing such an intelligent and knowledgeable counter argument was quite valuable. Typically, when I hear someone speaking in vocal fry I turned them out regardless their level of intelligence. You came right up to the edge and actually went over the edge when you started the Q&A. Valley girls and the Kardashians have made this form of speech popular. Why, I’m not exactly sure. A great example of someone who quickly comes to mind who does not use vocal fry and is a great role model is Judy Woodruff from the PBS NewsHour. You will not detect the smallest amount of vocal fry. You are obviously very smart and have a tremendous amount of wisdom to offer at such a young age. Don’t cheapen it With a questionable and demeaning vocal technique. I don’t believe you’re doing it on purpose, you don’t strike me as someone who would consciously value that speaking technique. Listen to your lecture and towards the end of some of the points you make and end of sentences you will hear what I’m observing. I want to hear more of what you have to say but at this point, I can’t get the vocal fry out of my head.

Next time you type up a 100+ word email telling a person to change their natural speaking voice to fit your personal tastes, consider leaving it in drafts. There is a full transcript of the lecture available; perhaps you would find it more palatable to use your browser's text-to-speech feature to read it to you in a man's voice.

Yes, there are the big name folks who everyone knows about and who didn't really surprise anyone—Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, David Sacks, Elon Musk (pre-fallout)—but the more troubling trend has been watching younger entrepreneurs and VCs listen to their podcasts, read their posts and books, and slowly nod along to the idea that democracy is holding back innovation.
