There’s sites online to even let you download ebook files wirelessly if you’re on the same connection. And otherwise adding books by wire is drag and drop

I have a kobo libra 2 and I love it. I don’t need to interact with any proprietary software. No ads. I just upload my files and that’s all. It’s perfect. You can categorize by series too, which was important for me
