Our work on the Panoptes antiphage system is published! Here we find that Panoptes "watches" the cytosol for phage immune evasion proteins–captured in this illustration by Clair Huffine of Insight Illustrations. A beautiful example of the effector triggered immunity paradigm.
Illustration depicting a bacterium under assault by phage. The bacterium “sees” phage immune evasion proteins and protects itself using a newly described antiphage system called Panoptes, named for the many-eyed mythical giant Argus Panoptes. Credit: Clair Huffine Insight Illustrations LLC

I have a fabulous undergrad who has a lot of experience with QIIME2 & using R to analyze microbiome data. She is looking for a job starting in January. Would love to learn more bench and field skills (will be getting some in her last 2 months). Open to academic, industry, government jobs in the US.

I know. I always support open access, but it was over 4K & we do not currently have the funds for that. I did put a preprint before on Zenodo which is updated doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

Same! Now, let's see if I still get requests to do "16S metagenomics"...ugh.

Super team of physicians, scientists, and public health experts come together with a single message: RFK must go.

"It is time to reverse course and begin rebuilding the public health infrastructure overseen by CDC. Kennedy has proven himself unwilling and ill-prepared to lead that effort. "

We help folks at #ASMicrobe, even when they sign up DURING the event. But if you sign up EARLY, you’ll get the FULL benefit of a mentor to ask questions of, as well as a small group you can make plans with ahead of time

Going to @asm.org next week? Come see my talk #4216 "Precipitation and Phosphorus Reshape Viral Infections and Virion Stability in Soil Ecosystems" Sun June 6, 9-9:15 AM. I will be highlighting the application of isotope probing with meta-omics to track viruses in soils.

Two big Space Science stories today based on NASA missions: JWST biosignatures and Curiosity on the cover of Science. No mention at NASA.gov or social media. Everyone is worried about science cuts yet Public Affairs is incapable of putting its own good news out for policy makers to see. Baffling.

I don't often give hot takes, but this obsession with turning the 1.5C climate target into an annual benchmark & forgetting that global temperature is responding to only 1% of the heat that's being trapped inside the climate system every year is enough to trigger anyone's internal @andrewdessler.com
Heat stored in the Earth system: where does the energy go?
Abstract. Human-induced atmospheric composition changes cause a radiative imbalance at the top of the atmosphere which is driving global warming. This Earth energy imbalance (EEI) is the most critical...

If you're not at #AGU24, the largest gathering of earth scientists in the world, and you're feeling some FOMO, don't worry: @kellyhereid.bsky.social has you covered.

Here's her feed of "what's hot at AGU". Just pin and enjoy! bsky.app/profile/did:...
