the incentives in the system are wrong and lead to and *have led* to these outcomes, and people - not just artists - are suffering. and society blames the victims, saying they are charging too much or not working hard enough or whatever else. it is disappointing, to say the least.

i can't imagine this sort of paradigm existing in hunter gatherer societies. just because someone is going out to hunt but their prey escaped, all of a sudden they go entirely hungry while others have food? humans have more empathy than that.

this last sequence of quotes is so heartbreaking. it *is* a societal failure that so many people live without knowing whether they will have enough money next month to pay the bills or whether they need to switch jobs, budget harder, work more... just in order to make ends meet.
