✨ SPS Welcome 2025 ✨

Yesterday evening, we welcomed our new cohort of #SPS researchers.

Head of Department @arnoutvanderijt.bsky.social, together with our academic faculty, greeted the first-year researchers and celebrated the start of a new academic journey.

Cheers to a fruitful year ahead! 🥂📚

Over the last decades, tertiary education has expanded rapidly - especially for women. They have overtaken men in all EU countries and the gaps keep growing in many of them.

In four countries, the gender gap is larger than 20 percentage points.

Are we ready for any egalitarian policies?

This headline is incredibly satisfying:
"The Ministry of Education wants to improve boys' education. It will appoint a representative."

After four years of my academic and public activity, the Ministry of Education now acknowledges a problem they denied as recently as 16 months ago.

90% of unaccompanied minors applying for asylum in the EU are boys.

People are more likely to accept gender inequality if it is men who are worse off.

A new paper with experiments on 35k Americans shows that when men are worse off people are:
- more likely to attribute the inequality to a difference in effort
- less likely to support pro-equality policies.

New article out in World Politcs. We analyze how different groups react to varying programs of social democratic parties. We find less trade-offs than often assumed. Generally, more left-progressive programs increase support among social democratic potentials

❗Among their electoral potential, social democratic parties face very few strategic dilemmas. Left-progressive appeals resonate most strongly.

New study in @worldpolitics.bsky.social

Are more women elected in proportional elections than in majoritarian ones? @gulczynski.bsky.social, @monikaturyna.bsky.social & @jkantorowicz.bsky.social examine local Polish elections and find little evidence of that. Read OPEN ACCESS: buff.ly/UH5PdOR

How do parties tailor their campaign ads to women? 🗳️👩

Excited to share that my paper on how parties adapt their ads is out now at @thejop.bsky.social!

📖 Read it here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

I recently spoke at the Women in Tech summit in Warsaw, reportedly attended by 14k people.

We discussed men's issues in front of over 100 women. I am grateful to the organizers for the opportunity.

You can now watch watch the debate:

Na stronie Banku Światowego pojawił się raport o nierównościach płci w Polsce z odwołaniami do artykułów @gulczynski.bsky.social o nierównościach płci w edukacji.

Wśród rekomendacji pojawiają się działania na rzecz chłopców i mężczyzn.

Much of the gender gap in life expectancy isn’t natural.

Men shouldn’t have to die 6, 8, or 10 years earlier than women. In many countries, the gender gap is only 3-4 years.

We could have more grandpas and fewer widows if we start taking men’s health seriously.
gulczynski.bsky.social
The government talks a lot about gender equality. But it has not addressed any men's disadvantage and created new ones. It has not mobilized enough women and is not credible to men.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

Trzaskowski's electorate is heavily feminised, with 40% more women than men (~58% of his voters are women).
Nawrocki won among men. But a similar number of women and men supported him.
Why? Because far more women voted than men - due to differences in longevity and turnout.

Interestingly, the support for both candidates was close to 50-50 in all age groups. But the gender polarization is notable. Nonetheless, the deputy editor-in-chief of the main liberal newspaper Wyborcza says: "what I missed in Trzaskowski's campaign was a message to women".

Trzaskowski lost by 370k votes. About 680k were up for grabs. These were men who didn’t want to vote for Nawrocki, but also didn’t vote for Trzaskowski.
