Pick your battle because it’s one or the other. Either we shut everything down with a general strike and protest every day or we let assholes like this terrorize us. Which do you want?

This sounds plausible to me. But if it’s true, it means that the age of social media might be over soon, with only the old and wrinkled (like myself) spending any actual time there.

More than half of Americans get their news regularly from Tiktok. And this has more than doubled in 5 years. Tiktok has become a key gateway to news and politics.

This makes ownership of and content on the platform even more important.

Absolutely. That really feels like democracy corroded to the point of breaking.

Never would have thought that someone could make me think of EU politicians as bulwarks of democracy, but US politicians certainly do... 😅

I think that American exceptionalism and the belief that "this can't happen to us" was exactly what made it happen to the US.

And I think that a lot of (non-US?) people knew and were afraid of that exceptionalism, even way before Trump.

But knowing about it didn't really seem to help at all... 🤷‍♀️

1/ Why are we so easily distracted? 🧠 In our new EEG preprint w/ Henry Jones, @monicarosenb.bsky.social and @edvogel.bsky.social we show that distractibility is associated w/ reduced neural connectivity — and can be predicted from EEG with ~80% accuracy using machine learning.

Super cool work!

If that's an option please please patent this! You can still open it up for noncommercial use.

Else, some mega tech company might use this for free, advertise it, collect the credits, make big money, while science gets defunded because ppl don't see that this was public funding.

👁️🧠 New preprint: We demonstrate the first data-driven neural control framework for a visual cortical implant in a blind human!

TL;DR Deep learning lets us synthesize efficient stimulation patterns that reliably evoke percepts, outperforming conventional calibration.

Diagram showing three ways to control brain activity with a visual prosthesis. The goal is to match a desired pattern of brain responses. One method uses a simple one-to-one mapping, another uses an inverse neural network, and a third uses gradient optimization. Each method produces a stimulation pattern, which is tested in both computer simulations and in the brain of a blind participant with an implant. The figure shows that the neural network and gradient methods reproduce the target brain activity more accurately than the simple mapping.

At UN Trump told every other country that they are "going to hell," said climate change is a "con job" + then demanded the Nobel Prize! Make America an international laughingstock again!

At LSE Philosophy we have two assistant prof vacancies - one for sustainability-related areas, the other for AI-related areas - and for neither of these will you need a $100,000 visa.

I have been wondering if there is an underlying capability factor that all the many benchmarks for AI are measuring.

It seems like the answer is yes. Overall correlation is moderate but not bad (median r ≈ 0.51) and there are distinct clusters (eg reasoning, code) with VERY high correlation.

Why does the header not mention the one *big* reason: that the current president is currently trying to eradicate all opposition, which certainly includes punishing everyone associating with Biden? Which *might* play into this?

@wsj.com cmon, I just started to think you were good at journalism :(

Just a reminder that what you experience in the U.S. right now is EXACTLY how the NSDAP takeover in Germany took place. It's like they used it as their direct instructions.

Hope you are all very aware about this...

Greetings from Germany.
