The mountain was living in my head. So I just had to climb it. The leg test ahead of Sunday's Pogi Challenge proved positive. The world's greatest male cyclist will be chasing me and hundreds of other hopefuls up Slovenia's toughest climb, Krvavec. Stand by for stories, if I survive.

Elite cycling stays close to its roots. My tale of Tadej Pogačar's return to his home village on this week's From Our Own Correspondent on BBC Radio 4 and World Service. From 23'10" - it's the the "and finally" item. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p...

There are certain media outlets I will not work for, even for decent pay. Continuing to create content for Twitter/X, for no pay whatsoever, became untenable with the change of ownership and resulting changes to the platform. Jim's points are spot on.

Absolutely !!!insane!!! to me that the UK government, lobby and newspapers litigate at length every minor infraction by the BBC, rival newspapers, or what some random columnist has posted. But all of them just carry on not even commenting about this media owner. He’s not hiding, he’s telling you!

I saw more of the Reds during the Souness, Evans and Houllier eras than at any other time. Lots of matches at Anfield, and most London aways from 94-04. It could be frustrating (never saw us win at Chelsea) but also fun (never saw us lose at Highbury). And then, the divot: youtu.be/AX598qMeQ7g?...

That match was bonkers. Hamann sent off for Newcastle for 2 yellows on 30'. Andreas Andersson actually scored. Steve McMananan captain, but off injured early in the game. Gerrard subbed on for him, then off at HT. Not a classic, whatever the match report said. www.theguardian.com/football/199...
Owen turns the tide for Reds
Sexy football met the club that put the X into Xmas Party to continue the remarkable tradition of one of the English game's most entertaining fixtures.

I had to check - the second 4-3, with Robbie's late winner, was actually March 1997, so the previous season. The rearranged match was a rare 1-0 (Owen). I didn't see that, but I was at the lesser-remembered 4-2 the following season, when the Reds came back from 2-0 down with Owen and Riedle braces.

I was supposed to be at Anfield on 31 August 1997 to see Liverpool play Newcastle. That one *did* get postponed. Family reaction? Well, that morning the first thing my mum said was: "Terrible news - the match has been cancelled!"
guydelauney.bsky.social
Remember that very well. The following day's fixtures were postponed, as officials began to unfreeze after the initial shock.

Indeed, that's what I surmised. But would be interesting to know the UK's direction of travel, especially with climate change denialists currently leading the polls (albeit 4 years out from the next election).
guydelauney.bsky.social
Interesting. Where is the UK on the per capita list? Has its much-vaunted windpower been in place too long to make an impact on this "growth" chart?

Mischievous, and not in the benign, playful sense. Grabbing the opportunity to take a swipe when there was no Serbian representative on the panel. Albania's Rama and Montenegro's Spajić were two Western Balkan PMs. The moderator didn't push back. Not great to play with civil war imagery round here.
guydelauney.bsky.social
"Serbia is on the brink of civil war," said Crotia's PM Andrej Plenkovic at today's Bled Strategic Forum. Is that correct? Well, thousands of high school students and their supporters are on Belgrade (and other cities') streets tonight. But peaceful protests, not combat. n1info.rs/vesti/najnov...

Yeah, I got a couple of what about merchants responding. Apparently what's happening in Palestine - or the BBC's reporting thereof - means fascist salutes in Croatia are a-ok. Or something.
guydelauney.bsky.social
If you don't want to be labelled a fascist, it's always a good idea to avoid making fascist salutes. Simples.
guydelauney.bsky.social
The gig itself was one thing. The rhetorical contortions that members of Croatia's governing HDZ party subsequently got themselves into were even more dispiriting. When you find yourself justifying the use of an actual fascist salute, it's time to look in the mirror. But what if they already have?

Journalese, innit? We hacks are terrible copycats.

So "always allow", rather than "automatically allow"?
guydelauney.bsky.social
Three years ago today, I saw De La Soul in Liverpool, ticking off a very large entry on my gig bucket list. Look at that set-up - a nine-piece band. Other hip hop acts take note - you can do better than a backing track and an empty stage (Tyler and Travis, I'm looking at you). Vale Dave/Trugoy.

Being a lazy journalist, I asked for a link for this. Then one dropped into my inbox, c/o @petepaphides.bsky.social. Truly, the universe serves the indolent (word chosen advisedly). For less than the price of six British flat whites - enduringly wonderful music. burningshed.com/index.php?ro...

Is there a link for ordering? Yes, I'm lazy. But I'll re-post with the link if you've got one.
