With Trump calling the climate crisis a "con job" and climate obstructionists leading more brazen attacks against climate science and policies, Starmer needs to attend COP30 and demonstrate his commitment to the science and talk up the benefits of low carbon technologies for the UK economy / END

At home, Labour has been losing more voters to the Greens and Lib Dems than to Reform, while the climate issue is a big concern for the British people.

Failing to attend COP30 and make the case for the UK's global leadership, green investment and jobs, could be another own goal for Starmer /4

At a time when Trump and other authoritarian leaders work to torpedo the existing global order, the UK government must show our allies, especially in the EU and elsewhere, that we are committed to multilateralism and the Paris Agreement /3

Regarding foreign policy, the UK needs to show global leadership through our climate action including pioneering legislation and progress on decarbonising the power sector and also solidarity with vulnerable countries through boosting climate finance and driving MDB reform /2
