Just one day before this eruption, La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent also erupted, killing 1,500 people. Two eruptions in two days with over 30,000 lives lost. A catastrophic couple of days in Caribbean disaster history & a significant wake-up call of the risks volcanoes pose in the region.

8th May is the anniversary of the 1902 eruption of Mt Pelee, Martinique, which led to the loss of over 28,000 people in the town of St Pierre. The eruption remains one of the most deadly historical eruptions to date & shows the importance of focused preparedness and early action ahead of crises.

This eruption shows what can be achieved when preparedness and disaster risk reduction are prioritised in advance of a volcanic crisis, and is a key inspiration for the formation of Global Volcano Risk Alliance.

Today marks the 4th anniversary of the explosive phase of the 2020-2021 St Vincent eruption. Effective monitoring, good coordination, extensive education campaigns and efficient communications contributed to the successful evacuation of over 20,000 people with no recorded deaths.

Super important thread here. VDAP has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands from volcanic eruptions and is the only international volcano crisis team out there.

Kudos to @lisgallant.bsky.social for flagging that the illegal USAID shutdown paying out right now may imperil the 39 year-old Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP).

For folks who don't know VDAP, it's a transformative and vital resource for volcano hazard mitgation across the world. 🧵

Today marks 3 years since the powerful eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano that generated a tsunami that struck Tonga & severed communication lines. This eruption was a key motivator for the formation of GVRA & our co-founders @mikevolc.bsky.social & @laramani14.bsky.social spoke to DW about it:
Hunga-Tonga volcano eruption sparks concern – DW – 07/02/2024
When underwater volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai erupted in the South Pacific in 2022 researchers were alarmed. The are now calling for closer volcano monitoring.

Three years ago, on Dec 4, 2021, Mount Semeru in Java erupted after heavy rainfall caused the collapse of its lava dome. The #eruption led to pyroclastic flows and lahars, damaging homes and several public buildings. At least 69 people died, 104 were injured, and more than 10,000 were displaced. 🌋

#30DayMapChallenge Day 14: World Map

Large explosive volcanic eruptions during the Holocene plotted by VEI (Volcano Explosivity Index). Volcano data from SI Global Volcanism Program.
Map of the world with circles of various sizes in shades of red, orange, and yellow. The circle size and color corresponds to size of explosive volcanic eruption that took place. There are far more smaller circles than very large circles, indicating that very large eruptions are (thankfully) less common.
