I tried to think of the most recent example I could remember of a Big 2 book specifically referencing real-life non-fictional current events, and this was the only one that came to mind--and to be fair, Bill (a conservative) would have a hard time publishing this today either. (Fables, circa 2003)

Remember the ominous pink runners I was finding all over the garden? And how I resigned myself to the idea that I was just going to have to wait and see what sprouted from them? Well, thanks to the mild winter we’ve had so far, I now have a definitive answer: yarrow!

Walking along the path, I saw some blue gramma grass in someone’s yard—probably my favorite North American bunchgrass. It’s semi evergreen in my Seattle garden but out here it’s completely dormant this time of year.
