Here’s the thing. If you can expose the secrecy - you might, might might, break the power.”

“O2: 40 victims
Vodaphone: 40
Orange: 45…..

And this is just the tip of a very big iceberg. This was a practice.

....and no-paper thought it was interesting.” #TheHack

Spoiler: It was not the death of self-regulation (or the PCC). The press still controls its own pet regulator, the PCC just rebranded as “IPSO”. #TheHack

The relationship between police and press ought to have clear boundaries. The police should fulfil the duties without fear or favour, and the press should hold them to account. Unfortunately, those boundaries have been blurred. And they denied it for years. #TheHack

"The kind of injury from which some victims simply never recover. A monstering is intended to destroy the victim involved, and it is intended to make sure that no-one stands up to them ever again."

Nick Davies “There is an art to fear. An art that News of the World and all those nasty buggers mastered a long time ago. They call it monstering. Grievous emotional harm." #TheHack

Need to see more of this Gordon Brown impersonation.

Can definitely recommend this ITV docuseries. Some of the things The News Of The World got up to and how they were discovered are mind-blowing.

Millie Dowler and Sienna Miller stories in particular are hauntingly tragic.

#DYK The initial investigation into hacking at News of the World - which failed to get to the bottom of the scandal - was carried out by a police officer who subsequently left the force. And then got a job with News UK. #TheHack

Cook: “These meetings are dominated by how to get the cases that are going well on the front of the tabloids, and the cases that are not going so well off them. By order of the Commissioner Dick will wine and dine the crime journalists. Guess who he meets the most? News of the World and The Sun.”

Davies: “Good press matters that much??

Cook: “Ever since Stephen Lawrence - the Met have made it their job to - well - Dick Fedorcio, director of communications? He currently sits on the Met’s senior management team. Our comms chief. Not a police officer. And he has direct impact on operational decisions.”

Davies: “Why would the Met not flag evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service”??

David Leigh: “Murdoch’s an eel. He’s entirely relentless.”
Nick Davies: “I’m not picking a fight with Murdoch”
David Leigh: “No, you’re picking a fight with our entire industry.”

#DYK John Ford has previously claimed that he committed illegal acts on behalf of The Sunday Times.
The Sunday Times denies this - but has also campaigned against Leveson 2, which would have investigated it further. #TheHack

👁️“Do you want the evidence or not?” - Nick Davies.
It shouldn’t be this hard to get evidence taken seriously - but the police and Scotland Yard initially ignored the hacking evidence, including transcripts of hacked voicemails which back up the hacking claims.
