It’s hard to advocate for killing an animal especially ones so endearing to the masses. It’s the opposite of the problem endangered species have- where pandas and tigers have a lot of awareness & funding because they’re cute/cool vs salamanders and bugs which just aren’t popular animals at all

All this to say- it’s weird that horses get that specialized treatment. The closest thing we have is TNR for cats which is usually done by volunteer groups and is not a policy enforced by a large establishment like the Bureau of Land Management.

Cats and dogs get put in shelters, neutered / spayed, and if they don’t get adopted they get put down. But as far as I am aware of wild horses they won’t euthanize them unless the animal is sick / etc

Yeah- but the thing with wild horses is that there are groups dedicated to keeping them in the wild and not killing them. Even though they are invasive. So to appease them the horses get birth control- which is something they have to do repeatedly because they aren’t neutering / spaying them.

I was astonished to find out that the Bureau of Land Management uses birth control (via darts) on the horses to keep their numbers low. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of any animal getting that kind of bend-over-backwards treatment to keep them in the wild lol

I had a rant written in my notes about this very same thing LOL. A movie about the beauty of the American landscape and the terrors of colonialism- but our hero is an invasive species? (I love Spirit don’t get me wrong but I feel you lol)

I’ve also seen people make ceramic hides! No need to worry about those getting destroyed. If I had access to a kiln I would go absolutely nuts hahaha

Here's a handy video of some warm-up exercises you can do to help get yourself prepared to shovel! Obviously, adjust them to your fitness level, but the main goal is get yourself warmed up for physical activity. You can't go from 0 to 60 here, & you'll get a better idea of what you can handle!

Now is a good time to cash out if you’ve got an old binder collecting dust. Even vintage cards in crummy shape can go for a few bucks in this market.
