It's a lot closer. There are some differences from the book, but the major ones are the lack of "evil American Gladiators" , that the characters are running around the whole country, and the organzied group of bounty hunters. These differences make it closer to the book.

That said, if bullies beat up kids each day of elementary school, that would mean being bullied is a "standard" experience.

Something being "standard" doesn't mean it's reasonable or fair.
