High recommend reading this beautiful piece about the Hudson's Bay Lowlands. In my work, polar bears don't make my list of "peatland typical species", but in this landscape, polar bears are definitely peatland species! canadiangeographic.ca/articles/ins...

Terrified to see what comes next. New bill means projects can be exempted from provincial environmental law. First target is the Ring of Fire, critical metals for EV's located inside the world's second largest peatland, the Hudson's Bay Lowlands www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
ANALYSIS | Doug Ford's Bill 5 is now law in Ontario. What happens next? | CBC News
Now that Ontario's controversial Bill 5 is law, the next question is what Premier Doug Ford will do with all the powers it gives his government.

On my way to #EGU25! Looking forward to presenting on Monday at the session "Paludiculture, peatland management and restoration". I'll be presenting my first results on biodiversity in solar parks on rewetted peatland 🐦🌱

Also, I would bring up the complete destruction of peatlands for mining, especially for oil and gas but in the future, maybe also rare minerals (Hudson's Bay Lowlands). While I research agriculturally drained peatlands now, oil and gas destruction hits close to home www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
hanna-martens.bsky.social
Thanks @hankgreen.bsky.social, it's so true! Why are we not all talking about how important peatlands are?! Globally, drained peatlands emit 5% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Wet peatlands are the best carbon capture system out there!
hankgreen.bsky.social
When I say you don’t have to worry about microplastics in your brain I mean that there is much stronger evidence that you should be worrying about other things that you don’t ever think about, like the draining of peatlands for agriculture, and things that you think about all the time, like fascism.

I've got the research area for this (peatland biodiversity) but not the photography skills unfortunately... Looking forward though to seeing all the cool wildlife photos that people submit! 🪲🦋

In 2014, finishing a stint as a baby intern, I blew the whistle about Canadian Geographic providing cover for the oil industry to sneak propaganda into classrooms. A report this week exposes that campaign and much more (and mentions my small role, too!) www.nationalobserver.com/2025/02/19/n...
Fossil Fuel industry actively shaping climate education in Canada: report
A new report has found evidence of a deliberate strategy by the fossil fuel industry to promote industry propaganda and viewpoints to obfuscate responsibility for the causes of climate change.

♻️ Activity on this platform has increased a lot over the last month, so we thought we'd bring back this post about Dr Cat Moody's awesome study.

Please get in touch with Cat if you do field work and can collect some water samples for her project 💧📦

PEAT are supporting Dr Cat Moody's NERC Fellowship Research 💧🌱🔍

Her work will compare pools created during restoration with natural pools and ponds. To make this a global study, Cat is asking #PeatECR to send her water samples. #PeatBsky 🧪📨
