His victims knew it was wrong. You can't just say "oh he was a man of his time" without acknowledging that all the people he enslaved were also people of their time and they knew it was wrong.

I always read that book as very generous to people with faith, while skewering the institutions that exploit them. It could easily have veered into "sky daddy" territory, but Pratchett is far too sensitive and humane for that.

Listen I love LOTR so much and always will but there is simply no getting around the fact that the dwarves are Tolkien's stand-ins for Jews and they are literally children of a lesser god and lack souls.
