I wrote about the lawsuit against the Atlanta Police Foundation, and why you should care about it no matter where you live: private actors are increasingly exercising public power while avoiding public accountability, at the same time that open records laws are being gutted slate.com/news-and-pol...
A Key Fight Over the Most Infamous Police Project in the Country Is Coming to a Head
The story of Cop City is both deeply local and intensely emblematic of national trends.

deported to a country he fled under threat more than two decades ago, for live-streaming a 'No Kings' protest. his family -- a wife and three kids -- weren't even allowed to say goodbye. chilling is an understatement

today, he was deported to El Salvador. this started with an arrest for stepping off a curb and ended with a journalist removed from the country. if you cover protests, you know how low-level charges can snowball into immigration consequences, even when the charges are dropped

earlier this week, a federal appeals panel denied his emergency bid to block removal. the court said, yes, he definitely had a First Amendment right to do his reporting, but still denied the stay. Mario has been a mainstay of the reporting community in Georgia for ~20 years

the charges (misdemeanors) were dropped within days of his arrest. and yet…ICE took him and caged him for 100+ days, pointing to an old immigration case. an immigration judge even granted him bond, but DHS appealed and the immigration board reopened the case instead

thread: atlanta-area journalist Mario Guevara was arrested June 14 while livestreaming a protest. one of the charges? “pedestrian in the roadway” -- he stepped off a curb as police cleared the street. it’s on his livestream. he was wearing a press vest, and identified himself as media.

can't stop thinking about what Daniel Kwan said about AI: the most dangerous thing is how quickly it's dissolving our shared reality. EVERY part of society is built on shared reality, on agreeing on "what happened," and i fear we won’t realize how fundamental it was until it’s gone.

proud of this edition of the jump line, which features incarcerated writers talking about their experience of heat in their respective prisons. my favorite line, from summertime in a women's prison in Maryland: "if we were orchids, we'd thrive." thejumpline.substack.com/p/inside-the...

I spent the week at the police surveillance convention and let me tell you my biggest observation: The name of the game now is consolidating as much information as humanely possible from surveillance devices, the internet, other governmental data, and literally a million other places. 🧵

this is a critical time for media analysis. if you report at face value the (false) premise that the federal government occupying cities is in any way an attempt to fight "crime," what you write becomes stenography for an authoritarian power-building project, intentionally or not

very excited to be partnering with Prison Policy Initiative for this -- please join/share with colleagues and comrades who might be interested in learning more about shaping news coverage of the criminal legal system!

The system is armed with media teams – for small orgs fighting for change, that can make it hard to get coverage

We're partnering with @justjournalism.bsky.social to change that. This webinar will help advocates looking to take the "lede" in the criminal legal system

I get why ppl want to spray for mosquitos — it seems easy and they’re awful. But, in reality, it hurts way more than it helps.

Call me crazy, but I don’t think we should be indiscriminately wiping out all insects around us during the age of mass species extinction.

Hundreds of monarch butterflies died in a winter 2024 event. Investigation implicated multiple pyrethroid insecticides:

From The Guardian:
"Combinations of pesticides can have a synergistic effect that makes them even more toxic.
The solution...less pesticides."

I know there’s so much going on BUT Trump’s Executive Orders on Policing have had impact in a lot of places — primarily in chipping away at the tiny modicum of transparency around police violence and misconduct, but in other ways as well. This is a really helpful resource, please use and share!!

My new standup special Positive Reinforcement premieres TONIGHT at 8pm eastern time on Blonde Medicine’s YouTube channel. I’m really proud of this hour and grateful to all the people who helped make the special happen.

Watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAvN...
Positive Reinforcement cover art!!! I’m wearing a cardigan with another cardigan draped over my shoulders. My name and the title are kind of styled like the Big Lebowski opening titles!

Follow @atlpresscollective.com for updates — mistrial declared; now Ayla has to wait even longer for resolution to their random arrest at the music festival over two years ago.

the first Cop City RICO trial starts today, two years after the indictment (a nonsensical document that sought to criminalize basic acts of mutual aid, among other things) came down. what happens to Ayla King, first of the 61 people to be tried, will impact protest everywhere.

Later @hannahcrileyy.bsky.social was talking about working to get narratives out there via existing/new media so people can see that "it’s not all loss. This is a time of deep demoralization but I’m hopeful that some of these [tactics] will inspire us to think creatively... more of us than them."
