My client requested he have large fiery eyes. I actually made some changes after this so that they more closely resembled glowing coals.

But it's handy to know where the paper will be hidden so that I don't accidentally paint an important detail somewhere that will never be seen.
Unless the client has asked for a hidden Easter egg of course...

Mostly lost beneath the paint is another pencil line that let me know where the aperture of the frame ends.
There's always a bleed area past this final line, so that there aren't any "empty" sections of paper peeking from the edge of the frame...

As such, the outermost line you can see drawn in pencil shows where the outer edge of the actual frame will be.

The thick, dark line is the edge of where the paper would fit inside the frame fixtures...

If you know my work, you'll recognise my background style - little detail, but swathes of colour and texture.

For this piece, my client had requested colours like those from my Krampus and Mari Lwyd paintings, with the added detail of a lightning storm and the subject emerging from the mist.

King of ♠️: The Grim Reaper. Stories tell of Baba accompanying Death on his travels, devouring newly released souls as the body died.

Queen of ♦️: Linked by the suit to autumn Baba here embodies the "crone" persona. Diamonds are also linked to the element of air and we see our eldest Baba flying about in her mortar with the pestle to steer.

Queen of ♣️: The suit of clubs is linked to summer, and earth and here we see Baba as the "mother" persona. Seen with chicken legs in the background, showing her hut that spins continuously on bird legs.

Queen of ❤️: Linked by the suit to spring & here Baba portrays the "maiden" persona, some stories linked her with Hecate & the maiden/mother/crone ideology. Hearts are also linked to the element of fire and so we see our younger Baba here eating a heart with flames behind her.
